Book Brawl Competition
NISD Book Brawl
Dear Parents:
If your student has expressed an interest in competing, our annual Book Brawl competition is open to all students in grades 6-8. The Book Brawl is a reading incentive program designed to improve reading comprehension and enthusiasm for reading using a fun and unique competition format. Participants will be given a reading list of eight books and challenged to read a minimum of three books from the list. Students form teams of their choosing and compete against each other to determine their knowledge and understanding of the books. This year’s books have been carefully selected by Northwest ISD Middle School Library Media Specialists and include a variety of genres, reading levels, and themes. All Book Brawl selections are available for check out through the school library, and digital versions are available in the Sora app, so there is no cost to participate. If students wish to purchase their own copies of the books, that is certainly their prerogative. The following titles have been selected for this year of middle school competition:

· The Bletchley Riddle by Ruta Sepetys and Steve Sheinkin
· Fast Pitch by Nic Stone
· The Labors of Hercules Beal by Gary D. Schmidt
· Refugee by Alan Gratz
· Small Spaces by Catherine Arden
· The Traitor’s Game by Jennifer Nielsen
In January, each campus will conduct its own campus-level competition to determine the school winning team(s). The winning team(s) from each middle school campus will advance to compete in the district competition, scheduled for February 19, 2026, at the NISD Outdoor Learning Center.
