About the Directors

James Smith

Band Director 
James Smith is a 1998 graduate of Texas Christian University with a Bachelor of Music Education degree.  He served as a graduate teaching assistant in band at the University of Kansas from 1999-2000 and earned his Master's of Music Education degree from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2010.  
    Mr. Smith is in his 1st year of teaching at Medlin Middle School. His bands have earned consistent “Sweepstakes” at UIL contest and special recognition at other festivals including “Best in Class” and
“Grand Champion” awards. Mr. Smith was named 2009-2010 "Teacher of the Year" at North Ridge MS and also Birdville ISD's Middle School Teacher of the Year.Other educator awards include BISD's "A Touch of Class Award" and the Jack Harvey Fellow Award (2010-2011) presented by Weatherford College to exemplary teachers. Professional and academic affiliations include Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Pi Kappa Lambda, Kappa Delta Pi, Golden Key National Honor Society and Kappa Kappa Psi.
 
Ashley Coleman

Band Director

Miss Coleman is beginning her 6th year of teaching. She is a native of Spring, TX and graduated from Klein High School. She attended Texas Christian University where she studied clarinet under Gary Whitman and earned her Bachelors of Music Education. Prior to teaching at Medlin Middle School, Miss Coleman taught in Glen Rose ISD for 3 years where she worked at both the junior high and high school campuses. Her professional affiliations are TMEA, TBA, Pi Kappa Lambda, Mu Phi Epsilon and Tau Beta Sigma. Miss Coleman spends her free time with Ellie, her energetic Pembroke Welsh Corgi. She also spends many a weekend cheering on the New York Jets, New Jersey Devils, but most of all her TCU Horned Frogs.
